Yulu observes the world through the lens of photography, drawing inspiration from the bold, everyday aesthetics championed by William Eggleston. Her visual language is shaped by a fascination with vibrant colors, recurring patterns, and structured motifs. Working primarily with portraiture, she creates emotionally fluid environments that allow her subjects to shift, move, and reveal—capturing moments that hover delicately between authenticity and performance.
Much of her work is rooted in the behavioral logic of childhood. Influenced by her own early experiences of growing up with little companionship, she often crafted props and imaginary worlds to entertain herself. This solitary sense of play now informs her photographic practice, where she invites adult sitters to return to a state of spontaneous, childlike freedom—exploring the blurred lines between imagination and memory.
Since 2024, Yulu’s focus has turned more inward. Her recent work confronts gender-based inequities and emotional challenges faced by women, delving into questions of female identity, intimacy, and the courage required for honest self-expression.
The cultural dissonance between East and West has offered Yulu a layered perspective, enriching her visual storytelling. Determined to give voice to the fragility of East Asian childhood and to reclaim the joy of early innocence, she uses photography not only as a tool of aesthetic exploration, but also as a means of social reflection and healing.
